Boundaries are the mental, emotional, and physical limits we establish to protect ourselves. These are things we instinctively say, "No" to as they defend us from being violated by others.
Like fences that separate one house from another, our boundaries define our individuality by separating who we are, how we think, and how we feel from those of another person. Without fences, your neighbor's dog can wander into your yard and make a mess of your prized flower garden. Similarly, without boundaries, other people will not know how to appropriately behave around you.
Standards are the "minimum requirements" that must be met in order for us to accept something into our lives. These are things we instinctively say, "Yes" to because they will help meet our personal needs. When you set your standards in all aspects of your life, communicate them, and enforces them, you will automatically influence others to treat you in a way that meets your needs, or even rise to your standards.
Having healthy boundaries and standards gives you the ability to sharpen and feel confident about trusting your gut feelings.
